Sunday June/ 3rd 1849. High Priests quorum net at the
appointed time , opened meeting by singing'' Know then that
every soul is free'' Prayer by presdSnow, who with his colrs,
as also Elder/ Hyde presdt of the quorum of the twelve, & Ezra T.
Ben/son one of the 12, Wm Draper the patriarch, Bishop Clarke,
& several of the High Council were present, in a large conger=
=gation in the Tabernacle. Sung '' Let every mortal ear attend''.
Elder/Hyde said he was requested by the Presdof the  Quorum
to make some remarks, & that if any business of the quorum
to be done, there will be an adjournment to the afternoon. He
said other people could rule themselves by the laws of the land,
but we should be ruled by it also, altho there is a paramount
duty for us to attend to, there is a constitutionatily amongst us,
& was so with Moses, altho he done & taught things which were
to suit the times he lived in, you will recollect the chain of
instructions given to the Conference. With regard to our brethren
going in the train; We did not say, don't go, for it would take
away free agency, & that I will never do. You may look upon
me as an ill shapen Bessel, but judge of the spirit which
flows from it. When Council is given, don't use persuasive
arguments to evade it. Cholera is broken out in the train,
the train is broken up, & the brethren coming home, better
they had taken counsel, & not went. Some of the officers of
the Coy seek counsel from us in cases under the laws of the
land, because they have been accustomed to ask counsel in
ecclesiastical matters. Let the officers of the law act in justice
& in mercy. We are required to choose men of Wisdom, of learn=
=ing even tie best men amongst us, & I think we have done
so, therefore let them go on & proper in all their just underta=
=kings. I am desirous the judges & officers if the County be good
intelligent men,& we have such at present who know law &
righteousness, will act conscientiously, & in all things for the
public good, & I wish them to act in their offices independently.
I warned before, that if not more prayerful there would be
a scourge. the cholera has cut off many good men who were
 coming
