Pres Hyde told him to go on and have it settled on the spot, Bro Benson stated that Carter had without any
just cause or provacation lied about him, and had spoken
slanderously of him and tried to do him all the harm that he could
in every way that  tongue was master of, and that he had even
went so far as to throw deadly weapon at him, and that his
malice drew out of the idea that he (Benson) had treid to git
his girls away from him, and he further stated that he had
called upon the parents of the girls to state whether he had done
any such thing, or even intimated such a thing and they said that he
had not, and now said he if Carter is willing to acknowledge that he
has lied about me with any cause I am will ing to forgive him,
Pres Hyde asked Carter what he had to say to that.
   Carter said that he did not know that Benson had rtied to
git them away from him, but he had seen Benson about
there and said that had lied about him without and cause
what ever.. pres Hyde than arose and said that in as nuch
as bro Carter had plead for mercy he would call a vote of the
house,, it was moved and seconded that  mercy be extended
towards bro Carter,the vote was unanimous in the affirm-
ative. Pres Hyde then said notwithstanding all this bro Carter
heart is not right before the Lord and I shall deliver him over
to the buffitings of satan and there shall a spirit arise in
his family that will give him great trouble, and treated
longely an the native of covenants, showing that no man had
a right to make any covenants without first going to the
first Pres of the church and giting the word of the Lord, and
then going to the parents or gardens and obtaining libery from
then, then corrected J. Meakham false notions of the nature of
of Covenants and Commanded him to teach then no more &c.
