and being called upon to make his confession and two or three times
interogated on the subject he wabered it,,Pres. Alred came out
and declared he was not right at heart,, that he did not ma---fest
a spirit of contrition,, he brought nothing forward without
being asked.
He said he was sorry but did not ask forgiveness,,some
remarks by Counselors Draper and Stoddard.. Pres. Alred proposed
the councils having the house to themselves, with the prisoner..
The Brethren retired,, Counsrlor A. H. Perkins said he wanted to
know if there was a conspiricy,, for certain things presented to him
that Idea.. This was the feelings of the whole council.. Remarks
by Bro's Alred & Snow who said if Bro. Bird bring out all who are
in connection with him in this thing the Council will then
forgive him but he must know that he cannot get the stain
from him.. Remarks by several,, Counselor Stoddard obseved there
were many things presented themselves to him which were severe
trials in this matter,, and seem to palliate in some degree for
these things,, and refered to a circumstance of hogs
being driven
into Camp at Garden Grove,, also to John Gheens having
been licenced to gamble &c.. Remarks by others,, William Bird
said he had been made acquainted --------these and other
circumstances of like nature, which had led him into it..
Rehearsed some of the transactions at puella last winter..
He then stated that Thomas Brown had solicited him
to join in making bogus and have one half they could
make.. The Council then required the obligation to be administered to Bird By L. Stoddard,, after which the Council forgave
him,.. It was then moved that the following ordinance be received
and adopted to be come a law unto this people residing on the
Potawatamie Lands.. (To Wit)
Be it ordained / by the High Council of the Church of
Jesus Christ of Letter Day Saints.. Resident upon the Potawatamie
Lands,, that any person belonging to said Church who shall steal from
the Brethren, he, or she shall pay four fold the amount, or in case
they have not the amount of property they shall receive not exceding thirty nine
lashes and if they shall seal from a person not belonging to
the Church but living among us they shall make satisfaction
