Prest O. Hyde moved that we as a people go to that authority
when we want spirituous Liquor, and that we give our
trade to those merchants, who coroborate with our
moves this day, carried in the affirmative..
The clerk then called up the case of Egbert Elsworth,
against, J. M. Benson and read the notices( To Wit)
Bro. J. M. Benson sir you are here by notifyied to
appear before the High Council on Saturday next, and
answer to a charge of slander against Egbert Elsworth,
and his wife.. Charge prefered by Egbert Elsworth,
This 8th day of Aug. AD1849

The Prest asked if Bro. J. M. Benson was ready to go into
trial.. Bro Benson said he was ready to make the
statements, he had formerly made,, but was not
prepared with testimony to prove the statements,
but the testimony was in the country,and could
be had.. Prest O. Hyde of the case was such that it
became the duly of Bro. Elsworth to Establish his
charge against Bro. Benson, and then if Bro. Ben-
-son can rebut it he will be sustained, But if he
cannot, Bro. Elsworth will have sustained his
charge.. Remarks from several of the Councillors,
and Bro. Benson asked for two weeks to obtain
he testimony,, two weeks was granted him, and
after some remarks relating to claims the council
adjourned for two weeks to meet at 10 oclock

The High Council met, at the School House persuant
to adjournment. Present of the Councillors James Allres,
Ira Oviatt Aaron Johnson, Geo. Coulson, James Mc Lellean,
Geo. W. Harris, Lyman Stoddard, Jacob G. Bigler, Henry
W. Miller, Noah S. Bulkley and J. M. Benson..
