that the hay was ready..And Warthon said he would
attend to hauling it.. But troubles with the mob coming
on, warthon was prevented from hauling the hay, and
soon after the prairie burnt, and the hay with it.. Jos Taylor
said further that Warthon came to his house and accused him
of being a dishonest man and a liar.. And made several
attemps tp strike him with an ax ,, and further he stated that
he called Warthon a liar and told him, his heart was black as
the bottomless pit of hell.. The affidavit of Mary Taylor was
then read.. As follows( to wit) Dec. 2. 1847/ Joseph Warthon came
to our house last Saturday a week ago, he appeared in a good
humor when he came in, and talked very sociable a little
while , when my husband told him that he had not
been to Misouri yet, had had his collar bone broken, and
had not got so as to have much use of his left arm yet My husband said to him I will pay you if you will
give me time not with standing the debt is not just..
Warthon said the fuss coming on in Nauvoo was the reason
he did not haul the hay,, my husband had before agreed to
pay him when he went to misouri and got him money from
there, to get rid of him,he told my husband he was dishonest and did not he intended to
pay his debts and was as honest as he Warthon was.. He then said
my husband was a god dammed liar, and a dishonest scoundrel,, my
husband then ordered him out of the house, he then slipped out
by the door, said god damm you, I don't care who the hell the
house belongs to, I will say what I please, and threatened to knock
my husband teeth down his throat, saying or swearing that my husband
followed him with a butcher knife,, my husband was mending or trying to mend, his shoes, when he came in and still had his knife in his hand.
my husband took the knife out of his right and put it into his----------
hand, and told him if he wanted to fight a man with only one hand to
fight with, he could do so,, when he threatened to knock my husbands teeth
down his throat,, my husband when Warthon made towards him tryed to pick
up the ax, but Warthon gave him a shove and got the ax himself.. I then jumped
in between him and my husband,, how he flourished the ax I don't know as
