July 9th A meeting was called by Elder
A. Hyde to inquire into the cause of difficultly that then
existing
between Joseph Meaham & William Carter'' The meeting
was called to order by O. Hyde and Elder O Hyde was
chosen to preside and Joseph Kelly was chosen clerk,
Prayer by the President,, after same good teaching from
the Pres relative   the affairs of the Church, it was then
declaired to be a publick meeting and Joseph Meakham was
called upon as the complainant to make his statement
Bro Meakham then stated the causes of their difficulty, which
he said arose form the comexion that Wm Carter had formed
with his  daughter Cordelia, and which believed was the cause of
her untimely death, he then went on to state the particulars
and to show that Carter had taken the advantage of him &
his daughter in their deep afflictions,and thus obtained her
concent to marry him, which contract she after wards became
dissatisfied with, but by Carter enforcing the ideah that she
would be dammed if she did not fill her contract with him
this gave her great distress of mind, and she was frequently
heard to say that she wished that her father was in his right
mind that he could tell her what to do, Pres Hyde ask
him if he had any proof of these things, he said he had
and said he should make no statements but what he
could proove,, he then said that after this by much
solicitation  Cordelia went to Carters on a visit &
on her return home she throw her self on the bed
and said that Carter was a mean devil and was no
better than Barnam & others that was whipt at the big
Camp and no better than a whore munger. After some
time had elapesed Carter came to see her & on his aprouch
she took her bonnet and left the house,
he then enquired for her and requested her mother to git her
to come in, she did so and talked with him with much reluctance and bithed in tears,
