Atchison County } On this Seventy day of January in the year
one thousand eight hundred and forty eight
personally appeared before my the undersigned a justice of the
peace for the Countoy and state above mentioned John M
Ewell---- who being duly sworn according to law declares
that h e is the identical John M. Ewell Who was a 4th Con
ponce in The Comany Commanded by Captain Daniel C
Davis in the Mormon Battalion Commanded by Capt Ph Hyes
Cooke 1st Dress that he was mustered into the service at
Council Bluffs Mo by St Col. J. Allen on the 16th day of July of
1846 for the term of one year and was discharged at
Pwebleum in California on the 16th say of July 1847 by reason
of expieation of term of service I never recieved any
discharge The Battalion to which I [-----] was musterd
out of service John M. Ewell

P C Merrill who being duly sworn according to
law declares that he was a commissioned officer
and Adjautant of the Momon Battalion, that
he knew that John M Ewell whose name is
signed to the above affidavit was mustered
into service and discharged as stated and
that the contents of saod affidavit are just
and true and that said John M Ewell was
honorably discharged [----] the service Adgt M B
